Romeo And Juliet Essays (1059 words) - , Term Papers
Romeo and Juliet It is not so much the central characters of the play, Romeo and Juliet themselves, as the minor characters that are responsible for their tragic end. I agree with this analysis to a high extent, but have also considered the other possible reasons why they died. The most commonly seen reason for Romeos and Juliets downfall would be the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. However, the over-looked, minor characters play an important role in the downfall of Romeo and Juliet. They were constantly pushing them into secrecy and forcing them to construct a large and complex plan that results in Romeos and Juliets deaths. Tybalt is the trigger that sends Romeo and Juliet off on their downward path. He is always causing trouble and never once in appears in the play without being in the battles. One can find him constantly harassing Romeo and trying to start a fight. When Romeo finally does fight him to get revenge, he ends up killing him and thus gets exiled as the Prince promised earlier in the play. Romeo getting exiled means that when Friar Laurence and Juliet plans their devious scheme, Romeo is not able to hear about it straight away. In fact, he never hears about it, so assumes Juliet is truly dead. Paris seems to keep everything Romeo and Juliet does very hasty as he wishes to marry Juliet in two days. This means that Juliet drinks the potion that night, where she speaks her monologue in her bed. If Paris wasnt going to marry her in two days time, then she would have waited for a reply letter from Romeo. None of the confusion would have arisen. Paris doesnt love Juliet, not as Romeo does, but instead his love is only skin deep. He never really gets to know Juliet. If he did, then she may have liked Paris better than Romeo, which would completely cancel out everything else. The Prince contributes by exiling Romeo near the beginning of the play. Romeo thinks this very unfair (Tis torture and not mercy. Heaven is here, where Juliet lies.). This causes many problems. Romeo cannot hear about The Friars and Juliets plan, so he doesnt know that Juliet was still alive when he killed himself on top of her. The Prince doesnt really play much more of a part than this. The Friar doesnt play a very large part in Romeo and Juliets tragic end. He concocts the potion, but this in itself doesnt contribute to their tragic end but it is fate, in that the letter he wrote never reaches Romeo in Mantua and so he doesnt know of the Friars plan. The Friar is always giving council to Romeo and Juliet and is really only ever helping the two lovers. The only thing wrong he does is to marry Romeo and Juliet just a few days after they meet. This is not good because it is too hasty as he points out when he says, These violent delights have violent ends which comes true within the next two acts. Capulet is the worst offender. He never allows Juliet to marry Romeo, because Romeo is a Montague. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet cannot have a normal relationship and must keep their love for each other well. Capulet also changes his mind very quickly. Near the beginning of the play he answers to Pariss query that Juliet is still too young to woo Juliet and that he should wait two years. Later on in the play, which is only a couple of days later, he tells Paris that he shall wed Juliet in two days time. This causes all sorts of problems. It means that Juliet must seek help from the Friar that introduces many more things that could have gone wrong. The Nurse also does not help. She tells Juliet to perform bigamy by marrying her to both Romeo and Paris. At the beginning of the act, she is on Romeos side and is paying out Paris. After that she rapidly changes and starts preferring Paris instead of Romeo. Romeos a disclout to him The Nurse quotes. She suggests Juliet should marry Paris. Even though, the Nurse never goes out to hurt Juliet.

The situation of leaving the usual environment a student is accustomed to can cause serious social stress. Though it is an exciting feeling of becoming a grown-up and receiving the ability to make oneââ¬â¢s own decisions, college life also requires a lot of responsibility and maturity. Misunderstandings of these issues on the part of freshmen who have just got freedom make them struggle many difficulties at the beginning of their college experience. A new life needs to create a new social network to get adjusted in the strange environment. The first significant issue the freshman deals with is sharing a room with a complete stranger. It is essential to take into consideration that the roommate if he or she is also a freshman also experiences difficulties caused by leaving parental house. Hence, the two strange people have much in common ââ¬â the necessity to establish themselves in the student society, adjust to college life tempo, and succeed in the educational process. From the first si ght, a new roommate can seem a disaster that is why it is critical to take into account his or her level of stress in this situation. The other significant tip is to get acquainted with the roommateââ¬â¢s habits, interests, and preferences and develop a joint plan for a pleasant habitation. Even two entirely different students can successfully live together if they are tolerant to each otherââ¬â¢s needs and desires, and nobody tries to establish the dominance. Besides dealing with a roommate, a freshman also faces the problem to get new acquaintances and friends to avoid loneliness and lack of communication. Every school year starts with a party where a freshman can meet other new students, findcommon interests, or just get involved in the student life. There are a number of places of interest organized by different student associations to vary a student life and supplement the monotonous academic study with new impressions and experiences. The student society also conducts c onstant meetings and travels that serve to increase cooperation and interaction among students. The most notable thing while looking for new friends and mates is to be oneââ¬â¢s own person; there is no need to do the thing everyone else does if there is no wish to. A freshman should not worry that he or she does is not going to fit any community or student group unless he or she pretends to be someone else. The student life can be much enjoyable if a freshman pursues his or her own interests and likings and thus, finds the most convenient communication environment.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on Coping with Your Issues on Your Own specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As the college life is a first stage of adult life, it requires mature behavior and relationships with mates, teachers, and partners. The educational staff understands the challenging difficulties a student faces while adjusting in college; however, i t is only a studentââ¬â¢s task to cope with the assigned work, social life, and living issues. If a freshman goes to a party, he or she has to understand that staying awake late leads to the late arrival to classes, bad concentration, and hasty; those do not serve for a substantial advancement or relaxing mental condition. One of the important factors of the successful study process is a sufficient socialization in the student community; this requires close communication with a roommate, course mates, and other students. Nevertheless, social life should not exclude education process or influence progress in studies. An adult person who a freshman already is should cope with all aspects in a grown-up way. Stress Relievers In addition to academic and social challenging issues, a freshman also experiences stress of the situation in general. The process and understanding of becoming an adult often leads to lower self-esteem and confidence in oneââ¬â¢s own abilities to manage a va riety of matters and tasks. A new environment and a necessity to share a living place with a stranger can cause stress and a feeling of loneliness. Multiple academic assignments, tests, and hard study arouse adrenaline rush; such busy social life is also accomplished with an increased usage of caffeine and a necessity to find a part-time job. There are several tips helpful to adjust and feel comfortable in the college environment. It is crucial to find or create oneââ¬â¢s own space where a freshman can focus and concentrate on the study he or she is coping with or just be alone for a while. If a freshman has an ever-present or noisy roommate, the quiet place can be found in the library or a comfortable corner in the coffee shop. During warm periods, the privacy can be established under a big tree far from crowded paces and lanes. Proper physical condition reflects proper mental one; so a freshman should pay attention to some physical activities to avoid stress. Walking is a perf ect relaxation option for the mind; besides, it can be done everywhere and free of charge. A freshman can walk to classes, between them, to a friendââ¬â¢s house or shops, he or she just need to take this advantage. Advertising Looking for article on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Another relaxing activity is yoga that is an excellent form of exercise and significantly benefits the health condition. Yoga classes are offered at gyms and in fresh air, and it can be done at different parts of the day. A balance of the right food and enough sleep also assist in avoiding student stress. Though fast food is quick, cheap, and convenient, it does not provide a freshman with all necessary vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates. Constant consumption of fruit, vegetables, fish, and juices balance the food ration and stimulate the learning process. A proper diet should be accomplished with enough sleeping hours that help the brain to relax and withdraw the useless information. Lots of freshmen find it hard to get enough sleep because they cannot manage their busy schedules. Thus, the learning process should be organized with either late stays awake or morning classes. There are also a number of stress reliever techniques helpful in overcoming tense situations during coll ege study. The usual lack of sleep can be supplemented with power naps during the day; they are short but enough to relax the mind and boost its productivity. The other helpful technique is visualization that needs several minutes to bring peace and calm to the tired freshman. A student just needs to occupy a comfortable position, close the eyes, and create a line of imagery pictures. The visualization can be accompanied with breathing exercise eliminating the student from stress. A technique called Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a good start and end of the student dayââ¬â¢ the activity involves tensing and relaxing all body muscles. Listening to classic music also helps to concentrate within the learning process, wake up mental productivity, and relax brains at the end of the day. Despite various techniques serving to relieve stress, it is important to avoid student pitfalls. Proper scheduling of the fulfillment of assignments prevents from all-night studying to manage the tas ks due to deadline limits. Proper sleep provides a compelling mental productivity and does not require constant caffeine consumptions. Long night parties also damage the studying process and are better to be exchanged for study groups that are helpful in education and provide necessary communication. A Perfect Study Session Body and Mind Preparation for Exams It is obvious that exam period is not a pleasant one as it requires much effort and energy and brings much stress and sometimes frustration. The success in studies is not a gift or blessing, it is a result of a right self-organization aimed to boost brain potential and involve all the abilities. The preparation for an exam should not be done in the last minute and should follow the proper learning of the material during classes and home assignments. A diligent student do not need to study at nights and in a harsh, he or she just need to follow the tips directed to get the body and mind ready. If the student does not enjoy proc rastination during the semester, it is easy for him or her to cope with the preparation. The main tips of proper exam preparation are a masterly study organization, usage of additional studying sources and techniques, and healthy body condition. The first thing to do is to set a study time and stick to it every day, it is crucial to take constant breaks to relax the mind. The time should be managed wisely to avoid long-term study sessions, and it is better to dedicate the first part of the day for mental activities. The clear workplace plays a significant role in the educational progress, thus, the desk should be organized to create a positive work environment. If there is no need and help, it is reasonable to cut out social media, TV, and video games before exams. Before the preparation starts, the student should set goals pertaining to the study process such as how much is aimed to be accomplished a day; moreover, personal limits should be involved in the schedule planning. Settin g priorities helps to focus on the most important exams first and stay concentrated on the major aspects. There is no need to stress too much and be obsessed with the results and consequences as it switches the priorities during the preparation process. It is good to establish cooperation with classmates in person and online to swap notes and conduct study session in groups. Additional materials and techniques in the preparation assist in boosting brain abilities and potential. There are three main types of memory ââ¬â visual, audial, and kinesthetic which should be engaged in the studying process. The usage of flashcards and presentations accumulate visual memory, audio sets and music accompaniment serve for audial memory, creation of hand mockups, diagrams, or other supplementing material works for kinesthetic memory. Gathering old notes and papers, rereading some textbook chapters, and redoing old tests and quizzes help to remind the studiesââ¬â¢ material. Besides persona l material, it is good to attend the library to expand the knowledge in the field and join study groups that target to provide better information cover within a shorter time period as every member does only a part of the job. Online resources offer anextensive help in finding necessary information and training; it is reasonable to keep in mind and use online quiz applications such as Quizlet. At the end of the preparation, it is beneficial to answer all study guide questions to check the achieved level of proficiency. Even proper scheduling and usage of additional materials cannot lead to a good advancement if they are not accompanied by right health condition. Hence, it is necessary to eat well, especially chocolate, fish, and berries that accumulate brain productivity. The student should also get 8 hours of sound sleep to relax between study sessions; regular exercises also contribute to the successful studying process. It is good to receive plenty of fresh air and drink much wat er and juice to stay hydrated; it is better to have coffee only once a day and in the morning to stimulate the brain activity and let it relax in the afternoon. Special Techniques The process of exam preparation is a difficult period demanding hard effort and causing much stress to students. The first rule is obviously to study every day during classes, lectures, and seminars and manage assignments, but even such diligent students face the problem to copy with upcoming examinations. The advancement in studies requires proper scheduling, constant studying, and knowledge of some additional techniques that help to accumulate brain productivity and use its full potential. The Pomodoro Technique was created and developed to improve time management of students in exam preparation. The main idea of the technique is a study structure consisting of constant breaks and short study periods. There is no need to take a book and dedicate oneself to its investigation for three or more hours as the brain cannot absorb all the read information. That is why the best way to gain knowledge and make it a long-term memory is to accomplish studies in sections. This allows the student to accomplish the task and keep continuous improvement with little effort and stress through effective time management. The first step in Pomodoro Technique is to decide on a task, set studying priorities, and perform a concentrated study within 25 minutes. Afterwards, it is necessary to take a 5-minute break to switch the attention from studies and relax the brain. This study-break session can be repeated three times when it is time for a longer break; it is good to take it in fresh air and go for a short walk. The technique is available in application forms such as FocusBooster, Pomodoro, and Pomodoro Time Management Lite. Such sufficient time management helps to achieve educational results with a lot less time spent. Another excellent technique is an 80/20 rule also known as the Pareto Principle tha t claims that 80% of student results need only 20% of his or her effort. The main key to achieve sufficient progress is not based on the intelligence level but study skills to focus on the right material needed to accomplish the task. There are syllabus documents developed for each subject in student course study; these papers and guidelines are available in print and online and should be used to avoid wasting time during the exam preparation process. Moreover, they often include glossary of terms that are required to be learnt while completing course study. There are also various study guides sold in shops that are helpful in filling gaps in student knowledge. The educational systems claim no separation between studentsââ¬â¢ outcomes and marks they get; nevertheless, class studies and textbooks are not enough to acquire the course material. Hence, study guides provide instructions of necessary activities and works to perform a full range of knowledge and focus on right things. T he right concentration leads to the cover of all required course content and improves academic performance correspondingly. One more thing pertaining to time management is a power nap that is a recreation break between study sessions. The main principle of power nap is its short term that, however, allows the body and the mind to relax and prepare for a further work. There are two great ways to experience a power nap not longer than 20 minutes that is enough to gain a new mental energy. It sounds silly, but it is good to drink coffee when you are extremely tired; the caffeine starts work after 20 minutes, so there is an opportunity to have a short nap before waking up from it. Another way is to set an alarm at 30 minutes and get into bed with the clothes on. Taking into consideration time necessary to fall asleep, the nap takes about 20 minutes; and it is easier to get up when having clothes on already. Ways to Overcome Distractions The preparation for exams demands a complete atte ntion to the subject and full concentration on its content. There are a lot of things that interrupt the student from the learning process such as Internet surfing like Facebook and Youtube, noisy roommates, or student parties. These distractions can be taken as minor hazards for a good advancement; however, it is better to minimize their effects. The progress in education can be achieved only under condition of the complete focus on the assignment; thus, there are some tips assisting in getting rid of surrounding distractions. The first tip is to turn off the music as it is almost impossible to acquire new and difficult information while listening to song lyrics. The only type of music permissible in the preparation is classic music which is slow and calm and helps to concentrate on the subject content. Moreover, it also isolates student ears from other minor noises such as outside talks, traffic noise, and murmurs. Therefore, it is reasonable to inform the roommates about oneâ⠬â¢s study hours and intentions to avoid bothering and interruption on the part of them. The best place to study is an isolated place where a student can dedicate all effort and concentration to accomplish the task assigned. If it is not possible to stay alone in the room, there are other quiet places perfect for studying like the library or small coffee shops. There is no much difference where to stay for studying, but the student shouldbein a place provoking no temptation to start up a conversation with a friend. One of the biggest distractions nowadays is the Internet that gives a plenty of opportunities to be distracted from studying for a short time; in fact, most of browsing takes much time and is anenormous waste of learning productivity. The best way to beat this temptation is to cut off the internet or disconnect Wi-Fi connection during the studying. In case, the Internet is needed for some research, the student should conduct it and save the findings on the desktop to pr event further need in the Net. Other prominent distractors are TV and cell phones that are always at hand and ready to destroy the learning process. Hence, it is better to put the phone silent and out of the view during intense study sessions. There should not be any TV on the background as it lowers the task accomplishment or stops it at all. Majority of favourite programs and films can be watched on the computer later or recorded on TV; thus, no TV, computer games, or phone talks are acceptable in the exam preparation. One more common distractor is munching, almost every student likes eating while doing homework. Firstly, it is worthless because the focus switches from the study content to the food consuming with all its flavours and aromas. In scientific language, the blood leaves the brains and concentrates in the stomach to digest the eaten stuff; so it is hard to acquire new information while eating. Secondly, the student desk has to contain only education-related items, and it is often full of valuable papers and course books that can be stained with fat and colorful spots from food. It is obvious from the said above that there are many distractions, and they are always going to be to get a reason to withdraw from studying. Only a student is responsible for scheduling proper preparation process to achieve success in the studying. The advancement requires self-control to avoid and prevent the possibility of distractors and manage to focus on the work and complete it without time wasting. In this method also, the valuation is performed using the projected free cash flow in the next 5 years using a projected growth rate and then a constant rate for the rest of years after the 5-year period, discounted by the required return for the shareholders. 3) 3) Price earning model- This equity valuation method is a market based method which calls for the market price an investor wants to pay for 1 rupee earning by the company. Higher Price-Earnings ratio designates that the company is overvalued in terms of its market compared to its earnings. Besides equity valuation, we have valuation for fixed income securities like bonds. Bonds, which have fixed coupon rate attached to them, pay fixed interest every year. The fair value of the bond is calculated by the annuity approach which is calculated by the summation of the net present value of the fixed coupon interest over the maturity of the bond with a discount rate as required by the bond holders. (Pinto, Henry, Robinson & Stowe, 2010, p.1) 1B)à On the Capital and Liability side of the Balance sheet of different organizations, the different types of capital and liabilities have different features. These are categorized under the major head ââ¬ËFinancial capitalââ¬â¢. The different classifications include the following: 1) Senior debt, 2) Mezzanine debt, 3) Subordinate debt, 4) Preferred Stock and 5) Common Stock. In case a company goes bankrupt, the company has to first pay back its obligations to the debt holders and finally to

DESIGNING AND PREPARING TO IMPLEMENT AN EVALUATION Research Paper
DESIGNING AND PREPARING TO IMPLEMENT AN EVALUATION - Research Paper Example For this reason, there is need to evaluate the use of Vermont Immunization Registry and incorporate it into a family medical center. Rationale Center for Disease Control argues that the recent increase in immunization of children has led to the increase in diseases like Polio, Measles, and Pneumonia, because there is no good database that is able to record all the vaccines that a child has been given. For this reason, CDC decided that Vermont Immunization Registry be evaluated to determine its strengths and weaknesses. Immunization has been identified as a cost effective and beneficial means through which new infections are eradiated or reduced. This project entails the creation of a computerized system through which immunization records can be safely kept and maintained. It is for this reason that the Vermont Immunization Registry (IMR) was implemented into the Family Medical Center. The registry was to promote quality and efficient treatment for the patients and to ensure that all immunizations are done on time and proper records kept. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2004) immunization has succeeded in eradicating diseases such as smallpox, measles, poliomyelitis, and rubella worldwide (Meri, Jordens, & Jarva, 2008). A computerized system for maintaining records of immunization is needed. The system should track the immunization dates, printed school, and parent reports. It is essential in guiding and timing the appropriate time for administration of vaccines. Health care providers for the past two years have scattered the medical record papers. Parents, therefore, find themselves looking for their immunization records. This has helped in saving many by ensuring that the right vaccine is administered to the children (Maciosek et al., 2006). Statement of the Problem Most of the parents struggle with vaccination procedures and dates. The research provides ways of training parents on how to access their vaccination data through the compu ter at any time. Most of the nurses, doctors, and family members are also facing a challenge in utilizing this program hence the need for evaluation Purpose of Evaluation It is important for health services, doctors, and patients to access their vaccination information at any time. This report shows the efficiency and advantages of accessing this information. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of Solution Criteria To be able to access vaccination data at any place all over the world Proposed Task Statement The problem can be solved by installing a computer guide on how to correctly input the data. Allocation of resources by the management also needs to be revised. Stakeholders Primary CDC- they are the reference point and ensure they support fully the evaluation program. They are also responsible for the evaluation program. Financial Committee- The director of finance must ensure allocation of funds for the evaluation program for all the hospitals within US. Secondary Stakeh olders Supervisors-Supervisors will be in charge of ensuring that there is proper training of the medical staff and ensure full participation of all those involved. Volunteers Staff and Parents Volunteerââ¬â¢s staff and parents will be responsible for taking part in the training program to ensure there is full evaluation of the Vermont Immunization Registry for the future. Tertiary Stakeholders Investors-this will include the private and public investors who are aiming at supplying the computer machines and upgrade programs. Key Evaluation Questions The evaluation of this training program will aim to answer the following questions: 1. What do the volunteers, staff, supervisors, and upper level management think about the current training program? 2. What are those that partake in the training learning as a result of

Mining Engineer Essay Example for Free
Mining Engineer Essay 1. Introduction Concerning the development of field of study, this paper will elaborate several issues regarding the mining engineer. They include the background of mining engineering, the requirements needed to be mining engineer, earnings for mining engineer professional and many others. 2. Education/Training Mining engineering like other engineering degree requires the mastery of several subjects such as mathematics including trigonometry, geometry calculus, and algebra; general science (physics, chemistry, and biology), and also social and humanities studies, information technology, and some courses in English since jobs in mining usually involve many people from different cultural background and languages (Daub, 2006). The course to obtain bachelor degree in mining engineering usually takes about 4-5 years. While the first two years, students learn about mathematics and genera science, the specialization of mining engineering occurs in the last two years in which students learn about geology, mine management, physical mineralogy and petrology, and explosive engineering. Some universities that provide mining engineering include University of Arizona, University of Utah, and West Virginia University in the U.S (Daub, 2006) and University of Exeter and in the U.K. in the University of Exeter (2007), the undergraduate students will have extensive course in mathematic and physics in order to arm the students with problem solving capability. 3. Job Skills, Talents, and Experience Mining engineering not only requires technical expertise but also physical fitness since jobs in mining engineering involves hiking, working in variety of condition such as daylight, rainy, windy etc (Daub, 2006). Particular jobs in mining engineering involves open-pit or underground mines, construction supervisory, safety issues, equipments operations and maintenance, information processing, to name a few (Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, 2007). Table 1 shows the comparison of several mining engineers in terms of required skills and talents in which each has different required capabilities. Table 1 Comparison of Skills and Talents between Mining Engineers No. Type of Engineers Required Skills/Talents 1 Blasting Engineer ï⠧ Develop blasting schedule and technique to intensify long-term goals in production 2 Sr. Mining Engineer ï⠧ Capable of developing and applying economic models to geological information system 3 Mine Engineer ï⠧ Performing routine activities in the operation and maintenance of mining equipment and systems 4 Senior Project Geologist ï⠧ Capable of designing and operating drilling programs to examine exploration potential in a location Source: (Sacrison Engineering, 2007; Kinross Gold Corporation, 2007) 4. Earnings Salary or earning for mining engineering jobs varies based on experiences, skills, industry, and job types. However, general mining engineers typically earn about $46,000 annually at minimum. However, for engineer who works in coal exploration may earn at least $50,000 per annum (Daub, 2006). Meanwhile, according to 2005 salary survey that conducted by National Association of Colleges and Employers, typically, mining engineers may expect starting salary about $48,643 per annum. Table 2 shows salary distribution in 2004 (Daub, 2006). Table 2 Distribution of Mining Engineer Salary in 2004 Distribution of Engineers 10% 25% 50% 75% 90% Salary $39,700 $50,500 $64,690 $83,050 $103,790 5. Benefits/Health Factors In addition to attractive salary packages for mining engineers, they also receive several allowances such as travel, overtime, and medical allowances that not only cover the engineers but also their family (wife/spouse, children) (Daub, 2006). 6. Employment In the U.S., the employment of mining engineer span from west to east coasts. However, there are concentrations of minerals in several areas such as Northern Michigan and Northern Minnesota for iron, Southwest for copper, and West Virginia for coal exploration (Daub, 2006). The purpose of jobs in mining engineering is to gather natural resources as raw materials for further processed that performed by other companies in order to produce final products or services (Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, 2007). 7. Typical Day There are two general job types for mining engineers: office and on site jobs. For office jobs, the working day is typically from Monday to Friday. However, for on site jobs, they may conduct various working days that differs from one company to another. For example, a company may set rules 2:1 that means 2 month of full time jobs in exploration sites and 1 month for the breaks (Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, 2007). 8. Conclusion Mining engineer is an attractive job since the occupations are often associated with high-wage jobs. However, as a rule, higher jobs mean higher risks. Therefore, we find that the underlying reasons of high-wage jobs for mining engineers are that they face high risk and require special skills. The scarlet letter :: essays research papers
Torment Of Misfortune The guilt, hypocrisy, and vengeance revealed in The Scarlet Letter. In an age of sexual repression and conservatism, there is never room for public show of relationships. Emotions and affection are kept hidden from the public eye. With such limitations there is always an urge to break from what is considered proper. From this, lies and deceit are born to cover our mistakes. Hester Prynne stands helpless on a scaffold with her illegitimate daughter Pearl, wearing a blazoned scarlet ââ¬Å"Aâ⬠, making known she is an adulterer. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale stands silent within the on looking crowd as his lover and daughter are to be persecuted. In the far corner, stands Roger Chillingworth, Hesterââ¬â¢s husband quietly embittered at his wifeââ¬â¢s infidelities. A soiled and twisted love triangle connects these three individuals as Hesterââ¬â¢s persecution draws near. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses these individuals to exemplify guilt, hypocrisy and vengeance through secrecy and sin in The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynne pities the life of her daughter Pearl, labeled a child of sin and a product of adultery. Pearl is in essence a real representation of the scarlet letter that she bears. Hesterââ¬â¢s own doing lays out the fate of her child. "â⬠¦[Hester's] impassioned state had been the medium through which were transmitted to the unborn infant the rays of its moral life; and, however white and clear originally, they had taken the deep stains of crimson and gold, the fiery lustre, the black shadow, and the untempered light of the intervening substance. Above all, the warfare of Hester's spirit, at that epoch, was perpetuated in Pearl." Hester has the power to make things right and announce the identity of Pearlââ¬â¢s father Arthur Dimmesdale, however she holds back for fear of ruining her partners reputation and esteem. Hester holds commitment to both Pearl and Dimmesdale, she endures the sting of guilt through her silence. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, a supposed ââ¬Å"man of godâ⬠takes silence along with Hester. He is guilty of his sins but more so guilty of being a walking hypocrisy in his congregation. To rectify his wrongs, he preaches of god and refraining from sin. However he continues to hide his relationship with Hester and denies his illegitimate daughter the privilege of his name. His commitments to the church are a conflict with his feelings of sinfulness and his need to confess. He yearns to confess but fears the negative outcomes. In his subconscious he wishes to tell all his sins, but results in his strong participation in church.

Management, Motivation, and Leadership Essay
Review Questions 1. Review the definition of management at the beginning of the chapter and briefly define each of the 4 functions. What are the challenges in carrying out these functions in todayââ¬â¢s hyper-competitive marketplace? Planning- Determining organizational goals and action plans for how to achieve those goals. Organizing- determining a structure for both individual jobs and the overall organization. Leading-directing and motivating people to achieve organizational goals. Controlling-monitoring performance and making adjustments as needed. The challenge in planning is that planning is essentially forecasting future actions and events. Most actions or events are dependent upon contingencies that must occur in order for the plan to be successful. The highly competitive nature of todayââ¬â¢s marketplace requires planning that can accommodate changes so management plans continue to stay on target. 2. How has the role of the manager changed in the last couple of decades? What forces have driven the changes? The old concept of a manager was one that drives employeeââ¬â¢s to work. The assumption with this model is that people that come to work do not necessarily want to work and that micro-management techniques and a heavy hand over employees is the only thing that will motivate them to complete work according to company requirements. Now however, the new theory of management is one where the employee is expected to be more of a self-managing professional. The managerââ¬â¢s role is more inspirational, leading by example and instructing employees rather than ââ¬Å"lording overâ⬠them. This change has occurred primarily in response to evidence that has found that employees who are satisfied with their workplace and enjoy their job are more highly motivated, higher producing and more focused on theà interests of the company. 3. Define technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills. How do these three skills connect with the different levels of management? How do critical thinking and decision- making skills come into play? Technical- Expertise in a specific functional area or department Human- the ability to work effectively with and through other people in a range or different relationships. Conceptual- the ability to grasp a big picture view of the overall organization, the relationships among its various parts, and its fit in the broader competitive environment. Front-line managers must have a high degree of technical skills, which help them hire, train, and evaluate employees; avoid mistakes; and ensure high quality production. Middle-level managers need an especially high level of human skills. They typically act as the bridge between departments, coordinating people and projects that sometimes have mismatched priorities. Top-level managers must demonstrate excellent conceptual skills in order to formulate a vision, interpret marketplace trends, and plan for the future. 4. Which theory of motivation do you find most compelling? What factors should you consider when choosing a motivational approach? Explain your answers. Personally, expectancy theory is the most compelling. I believe motivation is self-created. Therefor the reward is also self-created. For example, going for a run requires self-motivation, the self-reward is feeling better about yourself and looking better in return. You should consider the reward, the cost, the supply and the demand. 5. Outline the three levels of management planning in terms of scope of planning and typical questions and concerns. Why does communication withim the organization play such a vital role in effective planning? Strategic planning: Senior Management, Typically five-years time frame Should we acquire a new company? Should we begin manufacturing in China? Should we expand to overseas markets? Should we take our company public? Tactical planning: Middle management, Typically one-year time frame Should we spend more time servicing each customer? Should we hire a public relations agency to handle PR? Should we spend fewer ad dollars on TV and more on the web? Operational planning: First line management, daily, weekly and monthly TF How should we schedule employees this week? When should we schedule delivery for each batch of product? How should customer service people answer the phones? Successful firms often encourage flow of feedback up and down the organization to ensure that all key plans are sound and that all key players ââ¬Å"buy in.â⬠6. What is the purpose of a mission statement? Why are the most effectictive mission statements simple, vivid, and compelling? The mission defines the organizationââ¬â¢s purpose, values, and core goals, providing the framework for all other plans. It is simple, vivid and compelling so that the employees from the janitor to the CEO, from the customers to investors can easily understand. 7. Name five potential sources of competitive advantage that might be strengths in a SWOT analysis. Are these advantages likely to change over time? Why or why not? Premium brand name, proven management team, lower costs/ higher margins, diverse workforce, higher consumer demand. I think these are definitely likely to change simply cause who knows how long you can maintain a low cost, high margin company. Anything can happen. 8. What are the pros and cons of each key organizational structure? Which do you think would be the best fit for you? Explain your answer. Centralization: Pros: simple and efficient and the result tends to be a strong corporate image and a uniform customer approach across the front lines. Cons: typically respond more lowly to customer needs and have lower employee morale. Span of Control: Pros & cons are determined based on the abilities of both the manager and the subordinates, the nature of the work being done, the location of the employees, and the need for planning and coordinating. Line Organizations: Pros: quick decision making and no fuzziness about who is responsible for what. Cons: lack of specialists to provide advice or support line managers. Inflexibility, too much paper work and even incompetence. Line-and-Staff Organizations: Same pros as line organizations without all the drawbacks. Matrix Organizations: Pros: encourages teamwork and communication. Offers flexibility, lends itself to innovative solutions. Creates a higher level of motivation and satisfaction for employees. Cons: The need for constant communication can bog down a company in too many meetings. The steady state of flux can be overwhelming for both manager and employees. And having two bosses can cause conflict and stress for everyone. I think Spans of Control fits me best because I work best based off the location, manager, work being done and the planning and coordinating. 9. What are the characteristics of effective leaders? What leadership style do most effective leaders use? Leaders are trustworthy, visionary, and inspiring. Also includes empathy,à courage, creativity, intelligence, and fairness. I think Democratic Leaders are the most effective. 10. If an employee falls short of meeting his or her goals, what factors should a manager consider before engaging in disciplinary action? Explain your answer. I think disciplining employees for poor performance should come only after exploring the reasons for not meeting goals and making changes if necessary.
